The Grande Cache Medical Clinic Corporation (GCMCC) is a non-profit organization created on March 22, 2022 to support the continuation of Health Services to the residents of Grande Cache and surrounding Indigenous communities. The vision of the GCMCC is to provide a sustainable clinic that provides a positive environment to retain physicians and ensures that everyone will always have access to care.
CST Coal takes safety seriously, and is dedicated to provide a safe working environment for all its employees. The Grande Cache Community High School Elite Program is an in-depth vocational education program that has been running in the community of Grande Cache for over 30 years. The program offers local students in grades 10, 11, and 12, an opportunity to learn about the various trades including Automotive, Small Engines, Welding, Sheet Metal, Machining, Millwrighting and Electrical.
CST Coal has donated a Scotchmans' IronWorker to the ELITE program. According to Greg Nolan, Trades Education Teacher, “This large piece of industrial equipment will last decades and greatly improve our programs ability to teach the many different trades involved in metal work. We will be able to utilize this machine to test bend students welds, shear, punch, bend, coup and essentially work with all of the different types of industry standard steel to continue to improve our students welding and fabrication skills.”
CST Coal is a proud supporter of the youth in Grande Cache and thankful for the dedicated work and the continued community support of Teachers like Greg Nolan and John Hammer.
The Grande Cache Curling Club is a non-profit organization operated by a group of passionate volunteers and governed by a Board of Directors. Curling has been a staple in Grande Cache for decades and is enjoyed by residents of all ages within the community.
The President of the club, Kathy Cummings, stated that “the funds will be used for aging equipment maintenance, foam barriers for the ice sheets, equipment such as new sliders and grippers, signage, subsidizing the junior program and possibly new carpeting if there is any left over.”

The Grande Cache Community High School Environment Stewardship class participated in a field trip to CST Coal’s mining operations. During the trip, CST Coal’s team of experienced professionals had a chance to share their knowledge with the students including its best management practices for resource extraction, the life cycle of metallurgical coal, active bioremediation in CST Coal’s water management system, and the dinosaur track site.

On March 4, 2023, CST Canada Coal Limited (CST Coal) reported to the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) an exceedance of its daily Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) Approval limit of total suspended solids (TSS) in mine wastewater that was released from the Plant Site Settling Pond into the Smoky River.
Plant Site Settling Pond is an approved structure that is authorized to release mine wastewater and other streams into the Smoky River as part of CST Coal’s mine wastewater management system. Daily monitoring of this pond has continued and it has been in compliance with the daily Approval limit since the date of the incident. Since the release, CST Coal has submitted a release prevention plan to the AER to prevent a reoccurrence of this event in the future, and is actively implementing release prevention measures as they are identified in the plan, as well as ongoing and continued monitoring of the Smoky River.
CST Coal continues to cooperate with the AER and has complied with all of the regulator’s requests to date.
